About

She Runs has been created by a small, dynamic group of people who feel that girls are being under served. We feel that girls need a place where they can learn to be physical, healthy, and have fun while learning lessons about health, nutrition, body image and self-esteem. We also understand that learning these lessons between the ages of eight to twelve will give the girls who go through our program tools that will help them navigate school, peer pressure, and life in general. The vision of She Runs is as follows: “She Runs develops, supports, and provides fun programs encouraging physical and social wellness so that girls and women utilize their power of choice to direct their own lives and make healthy contributions to their ever expanding communities.” She Runs sees itself not only as an organization that provides programs but also as an organization that will be a resource in the community and for other organizations. We intend to create change in the lives of girls in addition to creating change in the communities in which they live.

Our pilot season occurred in the fall of 2007and our next season will start in March 2009. She Runs trains girls how to run or walk a five kilometer race. Our initial season was comprised of eight weeks of bi-weekly sessions and after some deliberation, we have decided to extend the spring program to ten weeks, to ensure our participants’ success. In our fall program we focused on conditioning drills and games, and have decided that this spring we will do more distance running in addition to the drills and games so that the girls will have more experience before the race occurs. Each week will consist of one session focused mostly on running and the other session focused on the aforementioned drills, games. We will also be adding a guest speaker component. We will invite local women and girls to come to every third session and talk to our group about their area of expertise.
